Brain Library and Digital Security

On Wednesday, February 25, Alzheimer Trefpunt Aalten - Oost Gelre - Winterswijk is once again organizing a meeting for people with early-stage dementia and their caregivers, loved ones, and other interested parties. You will receive information about dementia and how to deal with it, and your questions will be answered. There will be opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences, making these evenings a place to socialize and enjoy each other's company. The topic of this meeting is: Brain Library and Digital Safety.

Every day, more than 6,000 Dutch people fall victim to digital crime. Perhaps you have experienced it yourself or know someone who has. It can be very unpleasant and sometimes even cause financial damage.

Digital crime comes in various forms, such as:

  • Phishing: Fake emails or messages in which someone tries to obtain your personal information, such as your password or credit card number.
  • Identity fraud: Criminals use your photo and information from Facebook, for example, to impersonate you.
  • WhatsApp fraud: Someone pretends to be a friend or family member and asks you to transfer money.
  • Ransomware: Your computer is remotely "held hostage," preventing you from accessing your files.
  • Hacking: Criminals break into a computer or network and can then misuse data.

How can you recognize digital crime? And how can you protect your loved ones, vulnerable elderly people, and yourself against it? Lieke Ruesink from the Oost Achterhoek Library answers these questions and explains how "digital criminals" operate, what forms this crime takes, and how you can protect yourself against these types of scams.
