Fundraiser for the NK Tile-Flipping Championship on June 6 in Dinxperlo

This year, the municipality of Aalten is once again participating in the National Tile-Flipping Championship. During this nationwide competition, municipalities work together with residents to replace as many tiles as possible with plants, grass, and flowers. More greenery in gardens helps reduce flooding, keeps the area cooler on hot days, and contributes to a more pleasant living environment.

On Saturday, June 6, the municipality is organizing a collection drive at the recently landscaped parking lot of the Eurohal in Dinxperlo. From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., residents can drop off their removed tiles (up to a maximum of 30 m²) for free. As a thank-you for dropping off your tiles, you’ll receive one or more organic plants for your garden! The more tiles you drop off, the more plants you’ll get.

Why tile flipping is so important

The weather in the Netherlands is becoming increasingly extreme, with heavy downpours and prolonged heat waves. Pavers trap rainwater and absorb heat, causing cities and towns to get hotter. Did you know that a garden with plenty of greenery can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler than a garden covered in pavers?

And, of course, more greenery is better for biodiversity. It attracts birds, insects, and other animals. Research also shows that greenery reduces stress, boosts energy, and contributes to residents’ well-being. So, more greenery in gardens and neighborhoods not only helps combat heat and flooding, but also makes the environment more pleasant and healthier.

We’ll tally up the tiles you turn in and report the total to the NK Tegelwippen. In our region, the municipalities of Montferland and Doetinchem are also participating in the campaign. Together with residents, we hope to achieve another great result this year and stay ahead of the other municipalities in our region. Will you join us?
