Aaltens Hofje
Aaltens Hofje, a citizens' initiative
Joke Geerdes from Aalten was one of the founders of the Aaltens Hofje. She had noticed for some time that many seniors were lonely and needed more social contact. "In the past, there were retirement homes, where people could meet each other. But retirement homes are no longer relevant in this day and age."
When she read about a courtyard for seniors in Zwolle five years ago, she immediately picked up her pen and sent a letter to the municipality. "In a courtyard like that, people look out for each other and it's easier to stay socially connected. It also seemed like a good solution for Aalten."

Great interest
Her children warned her: you'll never get a foothold. "But within two weeks, I received positive news from both the municipality and the De Woonplaats housing association." A call went out in Aalten Vooruit, and more than sixty interested parties signed up for the information meetings.
The Aaltens Hofje, with 12 homes, is now a reality. Both elderly and young people live there. The communal garden was also recently completed. "It has turned out beautifully, a place where residents can easily meet each other." She does regret that the communal indoor space was dropped from the plans. "That would have strengthened the idea of neighborliness."
Start thinking in time
Joke believes it is important for people to start thinking early on about how they want to live when they are older. "And you have to do that before you are old," she emphasizes. "Don't think that it will all fall into place when you retire."
There are more Great Initiatives in the municipality of Aalten that focus on new forms of housing. Think of the Uuthuuskes. And architect Rinke ter Haar designed a plan for Multi-Generational Living. Do you have or know of a Great Initiative for a Mooie Toekomst? Then sign it up!
