The council adopted the Cultural Historical Inventory, Values, Expectations and Measures Map as the basis for the municipality of Aalten's archaeology policy. This is in response to the Archaeological Preservation Act (Wamz).

Vestigia BV Archeologie & Cultuurhistorie conducted an archaeological and cultural history inventory for the entire territory of Aalten and subsequently translated it into an archaeological values and expectations map and an archaeological measures map based on it. On the measures map, the municipality of Aalten is divided into 8 categories. The council linked the following measures to these 8 categories:

  1. Legally protected archaeological monument: licensing through the national government (RCE);
  2. Area or terrain of archaeological value, protected city or village view: always obligation for archaeological preliminary investigation for interventions deeper than 40 cm;
  3. Village core of 1850: no requirement for archaeological preliminary investigation for interventions smaller than 100 square meters and shallower than 40 centimeters;
  4. Area with a high archaeological expectation: no requirement for archaeological preliminary investigation for interventions smaller than 500 square meters and shallower than 40 centimeters;
  5. Area with a moderate archaeological expectation: no requirement for archaeological preliminary investigation for interventions smaller than 2,500 square meters and shallower than 50 centimeters;
  6. Area of low archaeological expectation: no requirement for archaeological preliminary investigation for interventions smaller than 5,000 square meters and shallower than 50 centimeters;
  7. Water (no expectation): no requirement for archaeological preliminary investigation;
  8. Area or site where soil archives are no longer present: no requirement for archaeological preliminary investigation.
