Combating Asian hornets
The Asian hornet is an invasive species of wasp that is spreading rapidly throughout the Netherlands. Until September, you are likely to see workers of this species flying around. After that, it will be the queen, searching for a place to build a new nest. It is important that nests are removed before that time.
The Asian hornet is a threat to biodiversity: it preys on bees and other insects, resulting in less pollination and fewer birds.
How can you recognize the Asian hornet?
Look out for the following characteristics: a black thorax, black legs with striking yellow 'socks' and a yellow ring on the abdomen. The European hornet (with mainly red (brown) characteristics) is protected. Therefore: is it red? Don't kill it!

What can you do?
Have you spotted an Asian hornet? Try to take a clear photo or video. Report your sighting at www.waarneming.nl.
Is it indeed the Asian hornet? If so, your report will be handled by a local working group that helps locate and remove nests.
Why is this important?
The Asian hornet has no natural enemies in the Netherlands. In other countries, it has wiped out entire insect populations. By identifying it in time, we can help prevent its spread.
