Reimbursement of healthcare costs

What is it?

You can receive special assistance if you unexpectedly incur additional costs that you cannot pay yourself. The following schemes exist for this purpose: special assistance, special assistance for health care costs, and special assistance for excess health care costs.

What are healthcare costs?

These are all costs that you would not have if you were not (long-term) ill or had to live with a disability. Think of: dietary costs, travel expenses, extra heating costs in connection with rheumatism, the personal contribution for, for example, adapted footwear and the personal contribution you pay to the Central Administration Office (CAK). You will not be reimbursed if the costs are already reimbursed, for example from your health insurance. The compulsory excess healthcare costs are partially reimbursed in certain circumstances.

Health care cost deductible

The special assistance mandatory deductible health care expenses is intended for the mandatory deductible for health insurance. Have you been charged €100 or more of your deductible in a calendar year? Then you may be eligible for reimbursement of half that amount.

How does it work?

Do you qualify?

Anyone can apply for special assistance with healthcare costs. The type of income and your age do not play a role. However, the level of your income and your assets are taken into account (the value of your own home does not count). Sometimes the municipality will ask for medical advice to check whether the special assistance requested is medically necessary for you.

When applying for special assistance health care expenses, the following are considered:

  1. Are the expenses necessary for medical reasons?
  2. Are you unable to pay the cost (in full) yourself?
  3. Is there no other institution that will reimburse the cost, such as your health insurance company?

Own contribution

Even if you do not have a minimum income, you may be eligible for special assistance with health care costs. Your income may be a benefit from the municipality or another agency, a salary or a pension. If your income is higher than 120% of the social assistance standard, you may be reimbursed for part of the healthcare costs. How much depends on your income and family composition.

  1. If your income does not exceed 120% the welfare standard, the necessary expenses will be reimbursed in full.
  2. Your own assets are taken into account, but not the value of an owner-occupied home. You do not have to use up all of your assets before you qualify for special assistance with health care costs.

Structural costs

If you have to incur the same costs for a longer period of time (for example, monthly travel costs for hospital treatment or the monthly co-payment to the CAK), you can apply for all those costs at once.

Keep the evidence

It is important to keep all bills and receipts. You will only receive special assistance with healthcare costs if you can prove that you actually incurred the costs.

What do I need?

  • identity documents of you and any partner and family members;
  • Evidence of your income, assets and debts of you and possibly your partner and family members;
  • Evidence of necessary health care expenses.
