Citizens' initiative

What is it?

As a resident of Aalten, you have the opportunity to place topics on the political agenda yourself. This is known as the right of citizens' initiative.

The citizens' initiative is an invitation to residents aged 12 and older to contribute to, for example, the livability and safety of the municipality. Any proposal/topic that is signed by 30 residents of the municipality of Aalten will be seriously discussed in the municipal council. The citizens' initiative is particularly open to ideas and plans for improving your neighborhood, your district, and your living environment.

How does it work?

What will the city council do with your proposal?

  • Once submitted, the Mayor immediately presents the initiative to the municipal council and the Municipal Executive. The Municipal Executive has four weeks to respond to the proposal or initiative.
  • After these four weeks, the council will put the initiative on the agenda for a council meeting as soon as possible, along with the college's response.
  • You will have the opportunity to explain your proposal orally during an exploratory meeting of the municipal council. You will be invited to attend this meeting.
  • Once the municipal council has made a decision on your topic/proposal, you will be notified in writing as soon as possible. The decision will also be published in the municipal section of Aalten Actueel and on the municipal website.

What is not possible?

Your topic/proposal must concern something that the municipal council can decide on itself. The citizens' initiative is not intended for questions, complaints, and/or objections to decisions made by the municipal administration. It is also not possible to submit topics/proposals on which the municipal council has already made a decision during the current council term.

What to do.

You Municipal Clerk’s Office inquire at the Municipal Clerk’s Office whether your topic/proposal is suitable for consideration by the city council. If this is the case, you must submit a request to the mayor to place your topic/proposal on the agenda.

Your request must include a brief description and explanation of your agenda item. The subject/proposal must be supported by at least thirty people via signatures. In addition to your personal details (name, address, date of birth, and signature), you must also include the personal details of your supporters in your request. Only if you are a resident of the municipality of Aalten can you submit or support a citizens' initiative.
