Municipality of Aalten and De Woonplaats will rent rooms to status holders
The municipality of Aalten and housing corporation De Woonplaats are going to make it possible to rent rooms to status holders. They will start a pilot with two single-family houses next year.

The municipality of Aalten has the obligation to house about 80 to 100 status holders each year. Status holders are refugees who have received a residence permit and have the right to stay in our country. This also entitles them to housing. The municipality is currently having great difficulty finding suitable housing for status holders. There are relatively many single status holders who should move on from an asylum seekers' center to regular housing. The Aalten housing stock now does not sufficiently match this. The available housing is mostly intended for families and is too large to rent to one person.
Room-to-room rental
For the group of single status holders, the municipality of Aalten and De Woonplaats will start a trial next year in which two single-family homes will be rented out room by room. This will involve three single people in one single-family home. This will make good use of the capacity of a single-family home. Before that, the homes must first be made suitable and furnished.
Many single status holders are awaiting family reunification. This period now often extends to two years. Once family reunification is a reality, they move on to regular housing.
Target
Councilman Ted Kok is pleased with the cooperation with De Woonplaats. "As a municipality, we have a legal obligation to house a number of status holders each year. Renting out rooms to single status holders is a nice interim solution to meet this task."
