Municipalities in the Achterhoek region will not grant fireworks exemptions for the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations
Starting on New Year’s Eve 2026–2027, a nationwide ban on fireworks for private individuals will take effect. The law allows mayors to grant exemptions to associations or foundations. The mayors of the eight municipalities in the Achterhoek region have decided not to grant any exemptions for setting off consumer fireworks during the 2026–2027 New Year’s celebrations. This means that associations and foundations are also prohibited from setting off fireworks.
With this decision, the municipality aims to provide clarity to residents, organizations, and other stakeholders as early as possible. The main reasons are the limited capacity for supervision and enforcement during New Year’s Eve and the excessive safety and liability risks. The municipalities therefore do not consider it responsible to grant exemptions for this New Year’s Eve.
After New Year's, the municipalities evaluate the policy, in part based on the experiences of the police and other relevant organizations. The results are used to prepare for future New Year's celebrations.
