Install a slot machine

What is it?

A slot machine is a machine that allows you to win money, such as a fruit machine. This is not possible with a skill machine. Examples include pinball machines and video games.

  • If you want to install a slot machine in your business, you will need a presence permit. You can apply for this permit from the municipality.
  • You do not need a presence permit for an agility machine.

How does it work?

When granting permits, the municipality distinguishes between:

  • High-threshold establishments (cafes, bars, and nightclubs). These establishments are permitted to operate two gaming machines (both gaming machines and skill machines).
  • Accessible establishments (snack bars, cafeterias, restaurants). These establishments may operate a maximum of one skill machine (no gaming machines).
  • Only hospitality businesses and gaming arcades are permitted to install slot machines.
  • The owner of the slot machine must have an operating license from the Gaming Authority.

Hospitality

If you want to install a slot machine in your hospitality business, the following additional rules apply:

  • You have a valid operating license for your hospitality business.
  • You have a valid alcohol license.
  • Only hospitality activities take place in your hospitality business.

What to do.

  • You apply for a residence permit from the municipality.
  • If you also own the slot machine, you can apply for an operating license from the municipality at the same time.
  • When submitting your application, please include the following information:
    • how many slot machines you want to place in your establishment;
    • the name and address of your business;
    • the name and address of the owner of the slot machine.
  • Always notify the municipality if anything changes. For example, if the vending machine has a new owner or if you want to install more or fewer vending machines in your business.

The cost of having one gaming machine is €56.50 (rate for 2024/2025).

Additional information

Are you a provider of high-risk games of chance in casinos or slot machine arcades? If so, you must be connected to the Central Register of Excluded Gamblers (Cruks) by October 1, 2021. Before a player can gamble, you must check whether the person in question is registered in this register. If so, you may not allow the player to gamble.
