Information for political parties

Municipal elections are held in the Netherlands once every four years. The next municipal elections will take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. More information can be found at kiesraad.nl. All important dates can be found on the election calendar.

Registration request party name

Parties can register their name (‘designation’) with the municipal central electoral committee. The party’s name will then appear at the top of the list of candidates and on the ballot paper. Parties wishing to register their name must be an association with full legal capacity.

Submit the registration request before December 22, 2025, 5:00 p.m. Please let us know by email when you would like to visit us, verkiezingen@aalten.nl. That way, we can schedule time for you.

Only authorized administrators may submit the registration request.

The articles of association and proof of registration with the Chamber of Commerce reveal who these individuals are. An authorized representative and a substitute representative are registered with the registration request. They authorize those who submit the candidate lists to place the name of the political party above this list.

Security deposit

Parties must pay a deposit to the municipal central electoral committee. The deposit is €112.50. The party will receive this deposit back if it submits a valid list of candidates in the municipal elections.

Submit with the registration request

  • The completed and signed model form“Request for registration of a designation
  • A copy of the articles of association (recorded in a notarial deed).
  • A recent certified proof of registration with the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Proof of payment of the deposit.
  • A statement from the political party regarding the appointment of the authorized representative and the deputy authorized representative; this statement is included in the registration request. These individuals authorize those who submit the candidate lists to place the name of the political party above this list.

Only registration required for new name

Sometimes it is not necessary to register a party name:

  • If the designation has already been registered in the previous municipal elections and a valid list of candidates was submitted at that time.
  • If a party participates with the same designation that is already listed in the national or provincial register. This is called carry-over.
  • If the party has no name and participates with a blank list.

No name without registration

Registration of a designation is not mandatory. A political party may also participate in the election with a blank list. In that case, only a number will appear at the top of the candidate list and on the ballot paper for that party.
