Meet Council Member Bas Koskamp
My name is Bas Koskamp. I’m married to Ellen, and we live in Barlo with our boys.
I’ve always been interested in politics. I read a lot and had an opinion on just about everything. When I was asked to run for office in 2021, I got the chance to actually do something about it. I was elected to the council thanks to preferential votes.

What does being a council member mean to me?
As a council member, you have a policy-setting and oversight role. But what I find most important is the role of representative of the people. I also think that sounds better than “council member.” By talking to people often and attending meetings, I try to stay as informed as possible about what’s going on in the municipality.
What issues are important to me?
Quality of life within the municipality, particularly in the smaller communities. Education and community life are important for keeping these communities strong.
What do I hope to contribute to in the coming years?
I would like to see the smaller communities, in particular, continue to develop. A few more homes, schools that can remain open. And community life—whether it involves sports or music—must be able to continue.
What makes the municipality of Aalten special?
Aalten is a great place to live; everyone is welcome here. Even within the council, we sometimes engage in heated debates and don’t always see eye to eye. Still, we get along well, and after the council meeting, we can still laugh together.
Personal
I enjoy taking the dog for a long walk early in the morning through our beautiful countryside. Or going for a bike ride with the family to further explore our lovely town.
