Mantel care home

What is it?

A family care home is an independent dwelling on your own property and is intended for the person you care for. You can also live in the informal care home yourself. The person you care for then lives in the accompanying house.

  • You can have a sheltered housing unit installed in your yard.
  • You can also have an addition built to your home.
  • A third option is to convert a garage or other existing structure into an assisted living facility.

How does it work?

Most people want to live independently at home for as long as possible, but sometimes this is not possible and help is needed. The first step is to see if someone close to you can help. Only if not enough help can be arranged is the municipality responsible through the Social Support Act (Wmo).

Would you like to build an informal care home? Then first contact one of our Wmo consultants. They can tell you whether your situation qualifies as Informal care defined in the regulations. They can also check whether your case qualifies for a permit-free residential unit.

Rules informal care home

There are a number of ground rules that you, as caregiver and care recipient, need to discuss carefully with each other and understand the consequences before you move into one yard together. Here are a few of them.

  • The Wmo consultant must assess whether your situation actually involves sufficient "care provision" to qualify as Informal care.
  • The informal care unit is only there temporarily. After the informal care situation ends, because someone dies or goes to a nursing home, etc., or because the informal caregiver stops, the informal care unit must be removed again. Or if there is a conversion of e.g. a barn, the space must comply with the zoning plan again after termination. The municipality (environmental permits) can give you further information about this.
  • A maximum of two people may live in the informal care unit. These are either the person who Health or the person who Health to someone in the main residence.
  • The home care unit has only a habitable first floor and may be built in an existing outbuilding of a home. A separate residential unit can also be erected. The latter can be bought and rented through various companies. The size of the care unit depends on the size of the current garden/yard. More information on this can be obtained from the municipality (environmental permits) telephone number: (0543) 49 33 33.
  • Depending on how you will furnish the additional living space, the informal care unit may have its own house number. This can have consequences for your taxes and possible benefits. This is customized and may work out differently for each situation.
  • If you live in a rental property, you must first seek permission from the homeowner.
  • If you own your own home it is also helpful to check with the notary to see if your wishes will affect the inheritance situation.
