First name change

What is it?

You can ask the court to change your first name. You will need a lawyer to file this request.

What to do.

  • Contact a lawyer.
  • The lawyer then submits the application to the court.
  • In the case of a minor, one of the parents or the guardian submits the request through a lawyer.

Modifying documents

  • Your new first name must be stated on your identity document. Therefore, apply for a new passport, identity card, and/or driver's license.
  • If the judge decides that your first name may be changed, the municipality will amend your birth certificate.
  • The municipality will register your new first name. All government agencies that receive data from the municipality will then also know your new first name.
  • You must inform other authorities yourself that you have a new first name.

What should I bring?

  • Your valid proof of identity

How long does it take?

This depends on how busy the court is.

Submit appeal

Has the judge rejected your application? If so, you can lodge an appeal with the court of appeals within three months.

Additional information

Transgender individuals do not need to go to court if they want to change their first name. A transgender individual can go directly to the municipality. However, a number of documents are required, including a statement from a doctor.
