Appropriate education
What is it?
The Appropriate Education Act ensures that children who need extra support also attend a regular school, close to home, as much as possible. Schools must be able to offer every child an appropriate educational place. If necessary with extra help in the classroom, guidance at school or in the neighborhood. If this is not possible, the school must provide a place at another school. For example, a school for special education, with smaller groups and extra support. The municipality ensures that help outside and inside school are as well matched as possible.
How does it work?
Schools in the municipalities of Winterswijk, Aalten and Oost Gelre work together in the Oost Achterhoek Cooperation Association. The partnership consists of fourteen school boards, 43 elementary school, three special schools for primary education and five schools for special education. The goal of the partnership is to provide a suitable place in education for all approximately 8,300 children, as much as possible within these municipalities.
Cooperation with municipalities is also essential here. The school is an important place to identify problems early. In this way, light care can be provided quickly and adequately. It can also prevent problems from escalating and pupils from dropping out. The approach also ensures that teachers receive support in dealing with behavioral and other growing-up problems of their students.
More information can be found on the website of the East Achterhoek Cooperation Association.
What to do.
You register your child in writing with the school of your choice. If you expect that your child needs extra support, you should indicate this immediately. If you register your child with more than one school, you also indicate this with the registration. In that case, the school of first preference has the duty of care. This means that this school has the task to offer your child an appropriate educational place.
