Sewer blockage

What is it?

  • The municipality is responsible for maintaining the public sewer system.
  • You are responsible for the sewer system on your own property.

Sewer blocked

If your sewer is blocked, you or the municipality must resolve the blockage.

  • If the cause lies on municipal land, then the municipality must resolve the problem and pay the costs.
  • If the cause is on your own property, you must resolve the problem yourself and pay the costs yourself.

What to do.

If you discover a sewer blockage, first check with your neighbors to see if they are also experiencing problems with the sewer system. If so, the cause of the blockage is on municipal property. Report the sewer blockage to the municipality. The municipality will ensure that the blockage is cleared.

If the sewer blockage only affects your property, the cause may be on your own property or on municipal land. To find out, you will need to dig up the boundary pit (or have it dug up). You can request the location of the boundary pit from the municipality.

  • If the drainage pit is full of water, the cause of the blockage is usually on municipal land. Always consult with the municipality first to see if you can hire a drain cleaning company and recover the costs from the municipality afterwards. The municipality wants to determine the cause of the blockage itself.
  • If the septic tank is empty, the cause of the blockage is on your own property and you are responsible for fixing it. If you rent your home, you can report the blockage to your landlord. If you own your home, you can fix the blockage yourself or hire a drain cleaning company at your own expense.

What does it cost?

If you hire a drain cleaning company, you will be responsible for the costs incurred by this company. These costs will not be reimbursed by the municipality afterwards, even if there is a blockage in the municipal sewer system. The municipality will only pay the costs for work that it has commissioned the company to carry out or if it has given you permission to hire a company.
