Smart City

Driving it smart, that's really what Smart City is. Information technology is used to manage and control municipal processes. This is still under development. Smart City can be divided into smart municipality, smart businesses and smart residents.

Example of a smart application

Some techniques are already being used in the country. Think of a sensor in a waste bin. When the waste bin is almost full, a signal is sent. The people who collect the waste can then see which waste bins they need to empty and which they don't. This way, they arrive at exactly the right time.

Larger cities in particular are busy developing Smart City. But it can also be or become interesting for our municipality. The developments of these smart applications are going fast and the costs are also gradually decreasing.

What are our choices

  • We keep a close eye on developments. As soon as there is a smart application that fits and is also financially interesting, we apply it.
  • We are not leading the way. First the technology has to be proven.
  • No one may simply place sensors and the like on lampposts or in other places in public spaces. Consultation with the municipality is always required to obtain permission to do so.
  • Privacy and security are critical issues in a Smart City. We continue to pay close attention to those.
