Heelweg/Hellweg: Working Together to Create a Beautiful Border—A Symbolic Start to Construction Work

Work on the Heelweg/Hellweg officially began on Friday, October 9. Local residents, members of the “Grensbeleving” working group, contractor Dusseldorp, and representatives from the City of Bocholt and the Municipality of Aalten were in attendance.

Heelweg/Hellweg is a unique place. The street lies partly in the Netherlands and partly in Germany. For the people who live here, the border is therefore part of their daily lives. That is precisely why the municipality of Aalten and the city of Bocholt are collaborating on the redevelopment of the street—not only to redesign the public space, but also to do justice to the unique character of this grensstraat.

Working Together to Create a Beautiful Border

Mayor Stapelkamp, City Planning Director Welling of the City of Bocholt, and Messrs. Diersen and Hoven of the “Grensbeleving” working group jointly lifted the curbs bearing the border markings. The curbs feature border markings in the form of crosses. The choice of crosses, rather than a solid line, emphasizes the open character of the border.

This symbolic gesture marked the start of the work and underscored the shared commitment to the Heelweg/Hellweg. After the opening ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to chat over coffee and tea.

Accessibility and Construction Work

Work on the Heelweg/Hellweg will begin in November, as soon as the work on the Aaltenseweg is completed. This will prevent multiple through roads from being closed at the same time. We’ll share up-to-date information about the work via the BouwApp. Search for “Herinrichting Centrum Dinxperlo” in the app and click “Follow” to stay informed about the work.
