Determination of candidate lists
For municipal elections, the municipality establishes two important bodies: the municipal electoral committee and the central electoral committee. Both play their own role in the electoral process.
The municipal polling station
The municipal electoral committee determines the official results of the elections in the municipality during a public session.
The central electoral committee
In addition, the municipality establishes a central electoral committee. The mayor chairs this committee.
The central electoral committee has an important role in the preparations for the elections. Its tasks include:
- the registration of political parties
- checking and determining the lists of candidates
- the official announcement of the election results
- the calculation of the distribution of seats

Nomination Day – February 2
On this day, political parties submit their final candidate lists and accompanying documents to the central electoral committee.
Closed session – February 3
On February 3 at 4 p.m., the central electoral committee will assess the submitted lists during a closed session. Among other things, the committee will check:
- whether the lists are complete and comply with legal requirements
- whether all necessary declarations are present
- whether the candidates meet the Requirements be eligible for election
If the central electoral committee discovers any deficiencies, the parties will be notified. They will then have two days, until February 5, to submit any missing documents.
Public hearing – February 6
A public hearing will be held on Friday, February 6, at 5:00 p.m. at . During this meeting:
- the candidate lists are finalized
- the list numbers are assigned, as they will appear on the ballot paper
If documents are missing or not submitted on time, this may have consequences for a candidate or even for the entire list.
After the publication of the final lists, interested parties may lodge an appeal with the Administrative Law Division of the Council of State within four days. The Council of State will issue its ruling within six days.
Inspection
On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the central electoral committee will examine the candidate lists submitted on February 2, 2026 (nomination day) in a closed session. These are the candidate lists of the following political parties:
- CDA
- Municipal interests
- BBB/HMV
- ProgressiveGroenLinks Left-Labor Party
- VVD
- ChristenUnie
The submitted candidate lists, the accompanying statements of support, and the minutes of the Model I1 hearing will be available for inspection at the municipal office (Hofstraat in Aalten) from February 4, 2026. Inspection is possible until the candidate lists have been irrevocably finalized. This is after the Council of State has ruled on any appeals or when no appeals have been lodged during the appeal period.
