Safety Monitor

How do you experience safety and livability in your neighborhood?

Participate in research

In the second week of August, 1,900 residents of municipality Aalten received by mail an invitation from CBS and Ipsos I&O to participate in the Safety Monitor. This is a survey on crime, insecurity, neighborhood problems and the actions of municipality and police in your neighborhood.

By giving your opinion, you can contribute to the livability and safety of your neighborhood. The 1,900 residents were randomly selected for the survey. Are you selected? If so, we are counting on your participation!

The municipality uses the results of this survey to create new safety policies with activities that we deploy for a safe Bronckhorst. For the reliability of the survey, it is important that as many residents as possible who receive an invitation letter participate in the survey. Share your experiences through the safety monitor and provide the information we need to make the municipality even safer and more beautiful!

The survey starts around August 8 and lasts until October 12. You can participate in the survey via the Internet. We expect the results in March 2026. In 2023 we also held the survey in the municipality of Aalten.

Frequently asked questions and answers

What is the Safety Monitor?

The Safety Monitor is a survey of safety and livability in one's own neighborhood. Launched in 2008, the survey measures the population's feelings of safety and insecurity at the national, regional and local levels. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) together with Ipsos I&O conducts the national/regional measurement (65,000 surveys). Municipalities participate on a voluntary basis. How is the questionnaire structured?

The questionnaire consists of a number of question blocks with the following topics:

  • Livability of residential neighborhood
  • Perception of neighborhood nuisance
  • Safety perception
  • Victimization (traditional crime and online crime)
  • Satisfaction last police contact
  • Judgment of police functioning in neighborhood
  • Judgment of police performance overall
  • Judgment of functioning of municipality (participation, municipal enforcers)
  • Police monitoring
  • Prevention (behavior, home, digital data and neighborhood)
  • Disrespectful behavior, discrimination and defensiveness
  • Suspicious situations
  • Background characteristics

Who will be surveyed?

For the study, it is important that persons from all population groups participate. For this purpose, CBS has drawn a sample from the municipality's population file. Residents aged 15 years and older (no upper age limit) and who do not live in institutions, facilities and homes can be approached to participate in the survey.

Residents in the 15-year-old sample are approached via a consent letter addressed to their parents/guardians. All other individuals in the sample (aged 16 and older) will receive a personal invitation.

In order for the survey results to be as representative as possible, only those persons in the sample may participate in the survey. Thus, the person approached may not be replaced by, for example, a roommate. Also, residents who spontaneously come forward to fill out the questionnaire may not participate.

How do you participate?

Participation in the study can be via an online questionnaire. The invitation letter contains a unique login code that can be used to log into the questionnaire.

Why participate in the Safety Monitor?

Participating in the survey gives residents the opportunity to voice their opinions about and contribute to neighborhood livability and safety. The results of this survey are important for the municipality, the police and the Ministry of Justice and Security. For example, the municipality can make safety plans based on the insights into the development of (internet) crime, nuisance and the functioning of the police and municipalities.

What will be done with the results?

The municipality and police use the results to adjust policy on safety and livability to the wishes and experiences of citizens. In addition, CBS produces an annual national report incorporating both local and national data collected.

Privacy

All data will be kept completely confidential and processed anonymously. The results are not traceable at the personal level. The results are not used for commercial purposes.
