Affidavit or solemn declaration
What is it?
The municipality keeps records of its residents in the Personal Records Database (BRP). These records must be accurate. That is why the municipality takes this information from official documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or divorce certificates.
You can make a sworn statement or give a promise to the municipality if:
- your data in the BRP or missing, and
- you do not have any other document to prove your correct details
Difference between sworn statement and promise
You make the sworn statement if you are religious. You then conclude with the words: "So help me God Almighty." In all other cases, you make a promise. You conclude with the words: "I promise."
What to do.
- You contact the municipality to prepare the sworn statement or promise.
- The municipality will first investigate whether there is another document that contains your details.
- If there is no other document, choose whether you want to make a sworn statement or a solemn declaration.
- You make the declaration under oath or give the promise at the municipality.
What do I need?
- your valid ID
- documents that clarify what data is involved (if you have them)
How long does it take?
Your statement or promise will be recorded immediately.
