Deleting sensitive personal data
What is it?
The municipality keeps personal data on all residents in the Personal Records Database (BRP). The municipality needs this data when, for example, you get married or when your passport expires. If necessary, the municipality may also share your data with other government agencies, such as the Tax and Customs Administration or the police. Or with organizations such as pension funds and housing associations.
You can only BRP information about your adoption, your child whom you gave up for adoption, or your gender reassignment removed from the BRP .
How does it work?
If you were adopted, you can have the following information removed:
- The name you had before the adoption.
- The names of your biological parents or caregivers in the period prior to the adoption.
- The nationality you had before the adoption.
- Information about the municipality, the address where you were registered, and your residence in the municipality during the period prior to the adoption.
- Your possible departure from the Netherlands.
If you have changed your gender, you can have the following data removed:
- Information about your name.
- Information about your gender.
- Use of the last name of your spouse, registered partner, or ex-partner.
What to do.
- Request the municipality to delete your data.
- Please indicate which specific data this concerns.
- If you are younger than 16, your parents must request this from the municipality.

How long does it take?
