Refugees from Ukraine
The war in Ukraine is extremely worrying. Millions of people have already fled the country. Ukrainians are allowed to live in the Netherlands on the basis of a temporary 2-year residence permit. A separate law has been created for them that only applies to Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainians are allowed to work in the Netherlands and are not subject to the integration law. They do not have to go to school to learn Dutch.
Approximately 75 Ukrainians are being accommodated in the municipality of Aalten (summer 2023). Some refugees are being housed by private families, while others live independently or in (small) municipal housing facilities. Ukrainians do not follow official integration courses, but they do receive language lessons and are helped to find work. A large proportion of the Ukrainian refugees in our municipality are in work. Children of primary school age attend regular primary schools in the municipality. Children between the ages of 12 and 18 attend the ISK (International Transition Class) in Winterswijk.
