Winter slipperiness and gritting

If it is or becomes slippery outside, the municipality will spread grit. Salt in dissolved form is used as a gritting agent, known as wet gritting. This can be spread preventively. This can be seen in the evening when the gritting truck goes around when it is not yet slippery, but slippery conditions are expected in the morning.

Drive carefully in slippery conditions and adjust your speed.

Please note that not all roads and streets have been gritted. In the Achterhoek region, all municipalities grit their roads at the same time. The municipality of Oost Gelre is sometimes an exception to this, which can lead to different road surface conditions on the municipal boundaries between Aalten and Lichtenvoorde.

Where is it being spread?

The gritting route is fixed and is the same every time. First, the most important roads are treated. These are mainly busy thoroughfares, dangerous sloping roads, and bus and school routes. Gritting a route takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. For financial reasons and to limit damage to the environment, not all roads are gritted. The routes are designed in such a way that everyone can reach a gritted route fairly quickly. Only in the event of prolonged slippery conditions or severe black ice are the other streets added to the route.

What can you do yourself?

You can also contribute to combating slippery conditions by clearing the sidewalk in front of your home when it snows. It often takes very little effort, and many grateful pedestrians will make use of your cleared sidewalk.
