When applying for your passport

• A good-looking passport photo no more than 6 months old that meets the passport photo requirements.
• All passports and identity cards you still have. Even if they have expired.
• If your passport was lost or stolen abroad, take the foreign police report with you.
• You pay directly at the time of application, preferably by PIN.

Additional take away for children under 18 years of age

• At least one parent or guardian must be present at the time of application.
• Written consent from both parents or the person with custody. Use the form from the municipality at the bottom of this page. You can also both sign at the application in the town hall, then you do not need to bring a completed form.
• (Copy of) the proof of identity of both parents or the person with custody of the child.
• Children must be present in person when applying for and collecting their passports.

When picking up your passport

• If applicable bring old documents with you, as this is stated on your pickup receipt.
• If the applicant is under 12 years of age, a parent or custodian must be present.

Do you need your passport quickly? Then apply for it urgently before 2 p.m. You can usually pick it up the next working day after 10 a.m. You will have to pay extra for an urgent application. If you no longer have your old passport or identity card, an urgent procedure is not always possible.

If you travel often (for example, for work), you can apply for a business passport. This is a normal passport, but has twice as many pages for stamps.

You can apply for a second passport if you:

• Travel to different countries for which you need to apply for a visa
• Visiting countries in conflict with each other

If you wish to apply for a second passport, the following requirements apply:

• Your current passport is still valid for at least 6 months
• You can prove that you need the second passport
   

Dutch citizens living abroad can obtain a passport from a large number of Dutch representations, such as consulates and embassies. Or at one of the border municipalities in the Netherlands. Such an application involves many different documents.

Fingerprints

Your fingerprints will be recorded in your passport. Health clean fingers. Paint residue and other dirt on your fingers can cause problems when taking fingerprints. Children under the age of 12 do not need to have their fingerprints taken.

Travel documents for non-Dutch nationals

Do you not have the Dutch nationality? If so, you may be entitled to an alien or refugee passport.

Validity

• Passport 18 years or older the validity is 10 years
• Passport up to 17 years the validity is 5 years
• Business passport validity is 10 years
• Second passport validity is 2 years
