On May 27, 2025, the municipal council decided to first draw up its own framework for the reception of asylum seekers in Aalten. The mayor and aldermen are awaiting this framework before taking further steps.

The information on this website is based on the previously proposed plan. Therefore, it is no longer entirely accurate given the current situation. We will keep the pages online so that you can review what has been shared so far.

If there is new information, we will update this website.

The municipality of Aalten wants to facilitate the establishment of a reception center for asylum seekers. On May 6, 2025, the municipal executive committee made a decision about the location: the reception center will be built on an undeveloped site on Singelweg Aalten.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) wants to place circular, flexible housing at this location. These houses are of good quality, sustainable and can be reused for other target groups in the future if necessary. The realization period of the reception site is expected to be one to three years.

The municipality of Aalten is working with the COA to establish the reception center. We are currently in talks to draw up a letter of intent and then an administrative agreement. The administrative agreement will set out arrangements for the reception center, such as responsibilities and powers.
Before the administrative agreement is concluded, we will consult with local residents and ask the municipal council for advice. This process will largely take place after the summer of 2025.

The undeveloped site is now zoned 'agricultural'. In order to realize housing and buildings here - partly for regular habitation, partly for asylum reception - the zoning must be changed to 'residential'. This is done through an amendment to the environmental plan. The municipal council makes the decision on this.

Once the zoning has been changed, COA can apply for an environmental permit to construct housing and buildings for the asylum shelter. Once the environmental permit is granted, COA can start construction of the reception site.

Both when amending the environmental plan and when applying for a permit, local residents and other interested parties can express their opinions or object.
