On May 27, 2025, the City Council decided to first establish its own frameworks for the reception of asylum seekers in Aalten. The college of mayor and aldermen awaits those frameworks before taking further steps.

The information on this website is based on the previously proposed plan. Therefore, it is not quite correct now. We do leave the pages online so you can read back what has been shared so far.

If there is new information, we will update this website.

The municipality of Aalten wants to enable the arrival of a reception location for asylum seekers. On May 6, 2025, the College of Mayors made a decision on the location: the reception will be at an undeveloped location on the Singelweg in Aalten.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) wants to place circular, flexible housing at this location. These houses are of good quality, sustainable and can be reused for other target groups in the future if necessary. The realization period of the reception site is expected to be one to three years.

In order to realize the reception location, the municipality of Aalten is cooperating with COA. We are currently in talks to draw up a letter of intent and then a management agreement. The management agreement will set out agreements about the reception location, such as responsibilities and powers.
Before the management agreement is concluded, we will enter into discussions with local residents and ask the city council for its advice. This process will largely take place after the summer of 2025.

The undeveloped site is now zoned 'agricultural'. In order to realize housing and buildings here - partly for regular habitation, partly for asylum reception - the zoning must be changed to 'residential'. This is done through an amendment to the environmental plan. The municipal council makes the decision on this.

Once the zoning has been changed, COA can apply for an environmental permit to construct housing and buildings for the asylum shelter. Once the environmental permit is granted, COA can start construction of the reception site.

Both when amending the environmental plan and when applying for a permit, local residents and other interested parties can express their opinions or object.
